Ice Dam Removal

What's Happening to the Snow on Your Roof:

how an ice dam forms result of an ice dam

What Are Ice Dams?

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining off of the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other parts of the house.

How The Dam Starts

  1. Heat escapes, rises and escapes into the attic warming the roof.
  2. Snow melts and flows down to a colder surface where it re-freezes, forming a dam.
  3. The dam prevents melted snow water from draining off the roof, causing the water to back up.
  4. Backed up water makes its way under the shingles and into your home.

How To Prevent Dams:

prevent ice dams
  1. Remove all debris from gutters before the first snow fall
  2. Have the snow removed from the roof by raking or shoveling
  3. Have the dam professionally removed by a specialist.
  4. Caulk and seal holes and air leaks, then insulate attic to prevent heat from escaping
